As mentioned elsewhere, Juan taught the regular academic program for many years as a senior painting instructor at the Academy of Realist Art (ARA) in Toronto, Canada. However, a great deal of his teaching during that period, and beyond, was also by way of workshops, both at ARA and at numerous other locations. He has conducted workshops and tutorials in places as far afield in the US as Miami and California, and in Canada from Ottawa to Alberta. Over those manifold interactions, Juan was fortunate enough to meet a varied and interesting cross-section of people who ranged from aspiring artists, eager hobbyists, to full-blown professionals. There are some helpful comments from students and/or workshop participants in the Testimonials section if you are interested.

Of course, in addition to his teaching duties, Juan has been busy painting. He is now one of Canada’s preeminent commissioned portrait painters, and he continues with commissions wherever and whenever possible. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his paintings and drawings, including major awards with the Portrait Society of America, The Art Renewal Center Salon, the Portrait Society of Canada, and, most recently, he was awarded the Living Master™ designation by the Art Renewal Center (

Juan has been recognized and featured in numerous publications, including American ArtistFine Art ConnoisseurPoets & Artists, and International Artist Magazine. Notably, in the latter publication, he wrote a major 6-part instructional series entitled “The Academy Way” in 2005-2006 which helped kick-start a more-or-less global academic art training trend that accelerates even today.
